This race car Porsche developed is by far the BEST sounding turbo car to ever be created. This is the Porsche 911 Carrera RSR 2.1 Turbo, I know, really long name, but don’t be fooled, every word in the name of this monster has its own purpose in identifying the car. Now, the craziest part about this car is the fact that I had no idea it even existed till a couple of weeks ago. See, a couple of weeks ago this car popped up for me on my Youtube account and that’s where I decided I have to make both a TikTok video and write an article about this car. Believe it or not the video I first saw this car in was a video Porsche made ranking their loudest cars ever produced and this thing came in first place. When I found out this car had a loudness of 138.1 dB I thought it would just be all noise. However, this car's turbo system produces the most unique sound I’ve ever heard and the loudness just has the car making an even bigger statement as it drives down the track. In this article, I'll be going over some of the interesting facts that made this car what it is and I’ll be describing how Porsche was able to have this Carrera RSR sound the way it does.
Getting right into it with a little backstory of the car as well as some of its performance capabilities. The Carrera RSR 2.1 Turbo was first created 1974 and it was the beginning of an extraordinary era for Porsche’s motor cars. This car was the first time Porsche ever added a turbo kit into a 911. It was also the first turbo-powered race car at Le Mans. Just think about it, you’re looking at a car that rewrote both Porsche’s and Le Mans history. What genuinely has me surprised about this car is, despite the fact that it was the “first” turbo 911, Porsche built this car exceptionally well. This classic jewel had a top speed of 300 km/h, weighed only 750 kg and redlined at a screaming 8000 rpms. Powered by only a 2.1L flat-six turbo engine this car was pushing a whopping 500 hp and did 0-60 mph in 3.2 seconds. How CRAZY is that! This was in the 70s, almost 50 years ago! This thing is literally a relic that isn’t afraid to show it still has what it takes to outperform a lot of modern sports cars.
All the performance facts you heard about this car are meaningless without hearing the sound of the exhaust system. I gotta be honest with y’all, once I heard the sound of this thing, I barely cared about its performance. I mean yeah it pushes 500 hp and has a pretty quick 0-60 mph time, but WHO CARES! I mean how many times have you guys heard me talk about cars that are much faster and have a significant power advantage over this car. No, in this article we had to make a bit of a change on the article's focus. This is all about THE WORLD’S BEST SOUNDING TURBO CAR.
I know you all were expecting a long description about how the Carrera RSR 2.1 Turbo’s exhaust system produces such a sound. But, the explanation is much simpler and quicker then you might be expecting. How does it sound like that you might be asking? Simple, this car doesn’t have an exhaust system. Right after the turbo system, there’s only a short pipe that’s a couple of inches long and that’s it! See, this is the real beauty of the RSR 2.1. Minimalism has worked wonders on this car. By having no exhaust, this race car can be loud, have ravishing turbo spools, and your classic stuu tuu tuu melodies connected to turbo cars.
Before I conclude this article, I know a lot of you were probably thinking right when you saw the headline of this article “how isn’t the best sounding turbo car not a GTR, Supra, or RX-7?” Believe it or not people there are so many cars we rarely recognize that produce more captivating sounds then the iconic jdm cars. So the moral of this is go out and search the World for these beautiful sounding cars, cause trust me they’re out there!
Seeing how much I enjoyed writing this article, I think I’m gonna have to follow up this article with the best sounding naturally-aspirated and/or supercharged car. Comment below which one you think I should write the next article on and feel free to mention cars that aren’t very well known!
Alright, thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed it and see y’all on the next one! Peace!
